DAVAO REGION will not be greatly affected by the Asean Economic Convergence (AEC) in 2015, said an executive of Phili1ppine Exporters Confederation, Inc. in Davao region (Philexport 11).
Philexport 11 president Ferdinand Y. Marañon, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao at the sidelines of Kepehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao on Monday, said this is because "most products that are being produced in the region are agricultural products" particularly high value crops.
He said most high value crops in the region like banana and pineapple have competitive advantage compared to the other member of Asean in terms of technology and experience.
Marañon said in a separate phone interview that Davao is advanced in terms of technologies and experience in the production of several agricultural products particularly in pineapples and bananas because the region has been producing it for years already.
"We are the most competitive when it comes to the production of certain agricultural products," Marañon said.
For example, he said the initial shipment of durian in Singapore earlier was favored by the importers saying that it is much better to other durians in Asean.
He said those who will be greatly affected by the integration are those who produces corn and rice because the two products are common productions of other Asean member countries who are more advance when it comes to the production of rice and corn.
Marañon urged farmers and agri-businesses to look or identify agricultural products that have a competitive advantage to become competitive in the integration.
