THREE University of Mindanao students have developed a mobile application that allows communters to move around the city in the most convenient and economical way possible.
Messica Joy Pesidas, Aljon Moliva, and Stephen June Fajardo, fourth year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology students from the University of Mindanao, has developed the mobile application D-Tour, which aims to assist commuters.
They presented the application during the Club 888 Forum at Marco Polo Hotel Davao on Wednesday.
"One of the reasons why we have created a navigation app for the city is that we wanted to effectively promote tourism on Davao, giving reliable commute information about the city, while, at the same time, utilizing an efficient type of technology very much used at present in many parts of the world," said Pesidas.
Pesidas, who is also the program manager of D-Tour, said the app will truly benefit new comers in Davao City in choosing "the best transportation choices based on their needs."
The mobile user only needs to input their starting and end location and the app will determine the most convenient and economical commuter route in the city.
She said they have already presented the project to the Davao City council last April 1 and are currently on call for a committee hearing.
Pesidas and her group hopes their app will push through in the city council and will become an official mobile application of the city.
The research stage of the application began in June last year and ended in December last year while the development of the application began in December 8, 2013 and ended in January 4, 2014. In March 22, 2014, a Beta version of the navigation app was launched in their Facebook page www.facebook.com/DavaoTourApp.
Currently they are on the process of securing a patent for their application. The app is currently available only for Android phones. They hope to develop a version of iOS phones soon.
She also said they have plans to integrate traffic updates in the application. Moliva also said that they plan to develop a web application and integrating SMS features in the D-Tour.
D-Tour is supported by the City Tourism Operations Office, City Planning and Development Office, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the Traffic Management Center through the provision of necessary maps, routes, and other data for the development of D-Tour.
