STA. Cruz Mayor Joel Ray Lopez said seaports are needed in the municipality in preparation for the Asean Economic Community (AEC) next year.

"Currently, we do not have any seaports in the municipality," Lopez said during the Davao Business Forum in Derspath at SM City Davao on Tuesday.

"With the entry of Asean investments, having a port will allow us to facilitate trade with the neighbors much more efficiency," Lopez said.
He said the a seaport in Sta. Cruz will be able to cater three provinces such as Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and North Cotabato.

Lopez said two oil companies -- Seaoil and Eastern Petroleum -- are developing seaports but these are for private use only.

"The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has proposed to the municipality for the establishment of a world class seaport," he said.
Lopez said Jica has already finished a study for the establishment of a modern and world class port.

Another initiative undertaken by the local government unit (LGU) in preparation for the AEC 2015 is updating its Comprehensive Land Use Plan (Clup) 2001-2012.

Sta. Cruz Provincial Agri-industrial Center (PAIC) administrator Camila Infiesto said they will be including climate adaptation strategies and provision in the revised Clup.

"The revision is ongoing and it is expected to be finished any time soon," she said.

Lopez also said they will include the seaports in the updated Clup.
