THE Department of Agriculture (DA) in Davao said the cacao production in the region reached a total of 3,844.30 metric tons, up by two percent as compared to 3,762.89 MT in 2012.

Maria Febe T. Orbe, DA-Davao officer-in-charge (OIC) assistant regional director, said the increase in the production level can be attributed to the growing number of farmers who are investing in cacao on the back of the rising global demand for the crop.

"The growth in the production of cacao stemmed from the huge demand of the local and world market," she said, adding that world market demand is pegged at 4.8 million metric tons.

Davao del Sur posted the highest number of production with 1,718.04 MT, followed by Davao City (1,129.73 MT), Davao Oriental (483.13 MT), Davao del Norte (371.82 MT), and Compostela Valley (141.58 MT).

In the recent years, Orbe said the local cacao industry in the region is experiencing a continuous growth. In 2010, the production was at 3,506.33 MT, 3,617.11 MT in 2011 and 3,762.89 MT in 2012.

From 2010 to 2013, cacao production in the region grew by 9.64 percent.

For the region to sustain its continuous growth, DA-Davao shelled out around P14 million for the cacao industry.

Orbe said the budget will go to providing farmers with seedlings, planting equipments, machines, post harvest facilities, trainings, and marketing assistance.

Davao City will be receiving P3.1 million, Davao del Sur with P2.4 million, Davao del Norte with P3.2 million, Davao Oriental with P3 million, and Compostela Valley with P2.2 million.

The region has a total of 5,045 hectares planted with cacao trees, which translates to 2.5 million bearing trees and employing 9,132 farmers. (Reuel John F. Lumawag)
