THE Davao City Business Bureau reported the application for business permit renewal as of January 31, 2014 has increased to 30,080 from 29,837 in the same period last year.

Business Bureau officer-in-charge Lawrence D. Bantiding, who guested in Monday's Davao Press Club's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao Annex, said most of the applications are coming from the retail establishments.

But he was quick to add that the bureau cannot provide the exact number of applications per industry since they are still in the process of collating the data.

"Though the renewal period has ended, we are still expecting more renewals. But late applicants will be penalized," he said.

Bantiding said they have started going around the city to inspect if establishments have renewed its business permits.

Despite the increase in the number of renewal applications, the bureau reported that there is a decrease in the number of new business applications. From 850 new business applications in 2013, only 549 have been recorded for 2014.

"But this doesn't mean that there is a decrease in the number of new businesses. There might be more since we are still in the process of encoding them all in the system. We expect that the number of new applications will be nearly the same with that of last year," Bantiding said.

Last January 2 to 20, the bureau conducted its annual business renewal period at the lobby of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and at NCCC Mall in Matina.

Last year the bureau issued 33,687 permits to business establishments in the city.
