MATI CITY -- The Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) is increasing its investments for tourism sites in Mindanao, said Mark Lapid, Tieza chief operations officer, who graced the formal opening of Subangan Museum here on Wednesday.

Lapid said that Mindanao will have an allocation of P300 million for Tieza projects which is higher compared to last year's allocation of P270 million.

One of the Tieza projects is located in Siargao Island, known for its surfing spots. The project includes the construction of duplex cottages and bleacher seats in Pilar Siargao Island.

Also in the plans is the development of the ecotourism potentials of Mt. Hamiguitan in San Isidro, Davao Oriental.

According to the provisions of Republic Act 9593 or the Tourism Act of 2009, five percent of the travel tax collection share intended for Tieza will be earmarked for ecotourism sites in depressed provinces with strong tourism potentials.

Mt. Hamiguitan, known for its century-old pygmy forests and home to the most diverse varieties of plant and animal life in the county, is the Philippines' nominee for inclusion to the list of World Heritage Sites.

"Tieza has been promoting Mindanao, last year we helped in promoting Mice (Meetings Incentives Conventions Exhibitions) in Davao," Lapid said.

Also part of its assistance in tourism in the region is a substantial amount of P10 million given to the province of Davao Oriental for the realization of the Subangan Museum.

"Having a museum is not just something that we visit, we see museum as a landmark as a means to inspire the people." Lapid said in his speech.
