MANILA—Denzel Bowles fired 32 points as Purefoods Star Hotshots overpowered Alaska Aces down-the-stretch to escape with a 96-89 win and sweep the best-of-three quarterfinal series, 2-0, in the 40th PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum yesterday.

The Hotshots showed their old deadly form and took an early 6-0 lead, which Joe Devance and Alex Mallari stretched to nine points, 30-21, in the first canto. The 6’8 Devance had three triples, while Mallari added one to start the second period.

Coach Tim Cone’s Hotshots will meet Talk ‘N Text in the best-of-five semifinals starting Tuesday. The Tropang Texters needed just one game to end Barako Bull’s hope, 127-97, last Saturday to earn a semis slot. The other quarterfinal match will pit top seed Rain or Shine against the winner between Nlex Road Warriors and Meralco Bolts.

“It certainly got scary there in the end. Rain or Shine said they had the toughest battle. I also say now, we had the toughest battle against Alaska. They kept coming back at us. Calvin (Abueva) was all over the floor, it’s hard to stop their momentum they keep on going. I can’t tell you how glad we are finishing this series with Alaska. it’s going to be one hell of a series against

Talk ‘N Text. They’re playing well, we’re playing well. Good to get that one through, I am happy,” said Purefoods coach Tim Cone.
