TO SAY that triathlon’s popularity has risen since the first Ironman 70.3 in the country last 2009 is an understatement. In just 40 minutes yesterday, all the 2,500 slots were sold out for next year’s Cobra Ironman 70.3 in Cebu.

Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI), the company behind Ironman 70.3 Philippines, opened its registration at 8 a.m. yesterday for all its triathlon events for 2015 and in less than an hour, the Cebu race was filled-out—eclipsing last year’s time, which took four hours before all slots were sold out.

The outcome in terms of registration in recent years was contrary to the registration of the 2009 series in Camarines Sur, where the registration period lasted for almost five months.

According to SEI project director Princess Galura, they started the registration at 8 a.m and after 40 minutes, the individual and relay categories were taken.

Galura said their system filled the maximum slots in just 40 minutes. There were those who had difficulty completing their registration process because of credit card failures, or internet and wi-fi disruptions.

“Merong mga tao na hindi agad na release yung slots nila dahil doon. Kaya meron pang iba nakaka pasok pa sa registration until 11 a.m. Pero at 8:40 a.m. allocated na talaga lahat ng slots,” Galura told Sun.Star Cebu.

The 2015 edition of Cobra Ironman Philippines is the seventh edition in the country.

It is the fourth staging in Cebu. The first three were held in Camarines Sur.

Among the events for the SEI next year are Xterra Off-Road Triathlon in Albay, Safeguard Active 5150 in Bohol, Regent Foods 5150 in Subic Bay, and the first Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 Philippines also in Subic Bay.

Galura earlier said that the seventh edition of Cobra Ironman Philippines 70.3 will be held Cebu, however, there were no contracts that have been signed yet.

The Cobra Ironman Philippines is one of the biggest triathlon events in Asia, it inked history last Aug.3 with 2,500 participants in six continents and 40 different countries.

The SEI has also branches the race outside the country, as they will host the Vietnam 70.3 Triathlon slated on May 10, 2015. The registration for the event starts in November this year.
