Speak out: Gilas Pilipinas defies basketball 101-A A +A
Monday, September 1, 2014
THERE’s a lot about the structure of our national basketball team’s roster that does not seemingly add up--guys that are too old to be there, positions that are unevenly filled, a height average that could have been taller and an import who doesn’t really fit the system.
Basketball 101 tells us that by failing to choose youth, stamina, height and compatibility over what we have now, our team gives up a lot especially in the fast-paced world of international competition. But, if our last two moral victories (as I’d like to call them) are any indication, Gilas is just stubbornly saying to hell with all of that.
No statistic or any technicality could ever make sense of what Team Pilipinas has done so far in this World Cup but if ever there is some sort of advanced analytics that could quantify heart and resiliency, we will undoubtedly be leading the tournament in those categories by a mile.
Look at how the fire in their eyes never waver even when the widely expected routs were threatening to unfold or how the team refused to go down without a fight apparently even after the final buzzer sounded or how most of our guys are shaking off bothersome injuries and are playing through pain. It’s more than just impressive, it’s downright inspiring.
Going back to Basketball 101, I think Gilas has basically broken most of the rules in that book when it comes to the X’s and O’s but they definitely have the “Play with heart” part going for them and that’s why they are currently shocking the world and making us proud.
Well, it’s the battlecry right? PUSO!
