CEBU’s taekwondo program got another confidence boost as products of the Cebu Taekwondo Association (CTA) made their mark once again in international competition.
The PHL national taekwondo team bagged four gold medals and three silvers in 2014 The World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2014 at the Pohang Gym in South Korea last Aug. 21 to 24.
In the seven competitions that the Philippines won, four Cebuanos won in four events.
The products of Cebu’s taekwondo are Clement Tan, Nichole Maurin, Rinna Babanto and McAvyngyr Alob.
Tan and Alob grabbed a gold medal in the team competition along with Jeordan Dominguez, Jaylord Seridon, Joe Vanni Colega, Rodolfo Reyes, Ardee Landrito, Juvenile Crisostomo and Elisabella Cesista.
Babanto joined Jocel Ninobla and Janna Oliva for a gold medal in the Junior IV Mixed Team Poomsae (16-18 years old).
Alob snagged the silver in the Junior IV Pair Poomsae (16-18 years old) with Clare Gascon, while Tan teamed up with Maurin for another silver medal in the Junior III Poomsae (13-15 years old).
“Their triumph says a lot about our program, which is headed by coach Glenn Lava,” Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) Region 7 chairman Tony del Prado told Sun.Star Cebu.
Babanto rose to prominence last year after becoming a world champion in the 8th World Taekwondo Federation World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship in Bali, Indonesia. Del Prado believes that Babanto will continue to rise and become one of the country’s best jins.
“We also see Rinna as the future anchor of the Philippine women’s team,” he said, adding that Tan and Maurin will also be the cream of the croup in the junior division.
“Clement Tan and Nichole Maurin are just two of our 15 and Under stars. They are the future of the Philippine national team.”
