WHO said Pacquiao would not show up at the PBA Draft scheduled on Sunday at Robinsons Malate?

He did. Rene Pacquiao climbed up the stage smiling from ear to ear after he was drafted player of Kia Motors in the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association).

Surprised? I was. So, Pacquiao the boxer has some basketball pedigree after all?

When called out by PBA Commissioner Chito Salud as a late pick of Kia Motors, Rene Pacquiao turned heads as he strode up the stage like a conquering hero plodding through fresh rubble of a conquest he had just scored.

TV hosts covering the PBA Draft kept saying Rene Pacquiao is a nephew of the real Macoy, Manny Pacquiao.
I heard others say—was petite Rizza the interviewer one of them?—Rene is Manny’s cousin.

Ellie Diccion of Avellana & Associates texted me: “I just looked it up on the Internet and most of the articles there refer to him as Pacman’s cousin.”

I also asked Demosthenes “Bobby” Rosales of BMW/Kia Motors. No reply. Maybe he is abroad? Again?

And then came Ellie Diccion again: “I have confirmed from CAC that Rene Pacquiao is Manny’s cousin. Thanks, Sir Al.”

CAC stands for Columbian Automakers Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Kia vehicles in the country owned by Palawan Gov. Pepito Alvarez, the man responsible for naming Pacman player-coach of Kia Motors starting with the 40th PBA season blasting off Oct. 19.

Pacman was a no-show on Sunday’s PBA Draft as he was in China promoting his fight against unbeaten American Chris Algieri on Nov. 23 in Macau.

Nonetheless, Pacman was still drafted as promised to be a player and thus became officially the player-coach of Kia Motors in its PBA debut.

But who missed Pacman on Draft Day?

I didn’t.

Rene Pacquiao was a more than enough replacement, especially because at over 6 feet, he towers over the 5-foot-7 Pacman. Exciting.
But again, this: Is Rene the cousin or nephew of Pacman?

From Ginia Domingo, the president herself of Kia Motors: “Rene is Cong. Manny’s cousin.”
