ZETHLEY Mae “Anday” Alferez routed Elizabeth Abarquez of Carcar, 6-2,6-2, in the girls 18-under finals of the 19th JRG Gullas Cup at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club (AVGCC) covered tennis courts.

Earlier, Alferez lost to Nikki Ong, 6-1,6-2 in the Girls 16-under finals but came home with a title of her own after winning the Girls 18-Under crown.

In the Girls 12-under division, fourth seed Bliss Bayking beat No. 3 Ellaine Bahongsua, 6-0,5-7, 6-0, while Joshua Ramon Torres defeated Venz Alforque, 6-4,6-4, to win the Boys 12-Under title.

Rupert Tortal beat Brent Cortes, 4-2, 5-4 to capture the 10-under unisex title.

Tournament organizer John Pages said the number of entries proved they were right in moving the tournament from summer to August.
“We had 240 entries, which was a record. It was a good move to hold it in August when there are fewer tournaments compared to summer,” said Pages.

Pages said that the all-indoor courts of Citigreen Tennis Resort and Alta Vista were also welcomed by the players.

“Dodong Gullas, who joined us during the welcome dinner, is excited for the 20th edition next year,” said Pages.

The event is considered the third longest-running junior tennis tournament in the country and a Philippine Tennis (Philta) Group 2 sanctioned event.

Pages hopes that by next year, the event will be a Group 1-level tournament.
