THE University of San Carlos Basic Education (USC-BED) Warriors dethroned the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 28-26, 25-19, 25-18, in the Shakey Girls’ V-League Eastern and Central Visayas leg at the Aznar Coliseum.

The 2013 champion USJ-R, started the first set with a 5-1 lead before USC caught up at 7-7. USC kept the charge and a service ace from Ressel Pedroza made it 18-11. USC still led, 20-13, and seemed poised to take the first set.

However, USJ-R mounted a comeback anchored on Paula Manining, Daniella Alfeche and Ma. Deanna Izabella Wong to even the score at 24 all.
“I told my players to focus on the game on that tightly-contested first set. I said to them that they should keep fighting,” Warriors head coach Vanessa Juezan told Sun.Star Cebu.

Manining put USJ-R level again at 26-26, before Kate Chantal Rodriguez and Ann Sabellano scored on a block to make it 27-26. They sealed the first set after a reception error from USJ-R.

In the second set, the second seeded USC rode on its momentum and took a 13-6 early lead via a service ace from Elisa Anore Bacaltos. Rodriguez split two blockers to make it 17-8. The Jaguars fought back again and got close, 18-17, but Sabellano and Sheena Teriote fought back for USC for a 25-19 score.

In the third set, it was all USC as the Warriors completed the sweep for their frist Shakey’s V-League Eastern and Central Visayas title. They will be going to the National Finals on Jan. 18 to 23.

“Our players and the coaching staff are very happy. This is the first time we won in the Shakey V-League. Our hard work paid off as I told them not to relax when we had the lead,” said Juezan, whose team got the bronze medal in the 19th Milo Little Olympics.
“We have no guest players, we have the same players who played in the Milo,” she added.

The Warriors finished second in Bracket A and defeated Bracket B No. 1 Pajo National High School (PNS), 26-24, 25-22 in the semifinals. USJ-R was undefeated in the elimination and topped Bracket A. USJ-R beat Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 25-22, 15-25,26-24, in the semis.

In the battle for third, SWU recovered from a first set meltdown to beat Pajo, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20. RSC
