THE Australian Men’s national basketball team whipped Gilas Pilipinas, 97-75, on the second day of 2014 Antibes international tournament at the Azur Arena in Antibes, a resort town in Southern France, yesterday.
Led by the fifth overall pick in the recent NBA rookie Draft, Dante Exum, the Aussies did not give Gilas the chance to showcase the energetic game they showed against France the other day.
Even if the incoming Utah Jazz rookie finished with only eight points, five rebounds and six assists, his all-around game was enough to deny the smaller Gilas a good fight.
Australia opened the four-team tournament with a 74-65 win over Ukraine.
The energy level Gilas showed that gave France a tough night, was not there as the bigger Australians jumped off to a good start and never looked back on their way to score an 18-point victory.
San Antonio Spurs center Aaron Baynes topscored with 15 points, Ryan Broekhoff contributed 14 points and Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Matthew Dellavedova and Brad Newley finished with 13 points each. Nathan Jawai had 10 points for Australia.
It was Exum, Dellavedova, Broekhoff and Baynes who led a choking second half attack that left Gilas gasping for breath.
Naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche led Gilas scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Jayson Castro added 12 points, Jeff Chan made 11 and Gary David sank 10 points.
Today, Gilas will try to salvage a victory against the Mike Fratello-mentored Ukraine.
