THE heavy rain and muddy route prevented Philippine team cyclist John Meir in making another podium finish in the men’s cross-country race yesterday in the second leg of Asean MTB Cup in Masilou Highlands Kundasang, Malaysia.

The 22-year-old Mier snatched the men’s open gold medal in the first leg in Danao City last June. However, the men’s open category was excluded in the second leg, forcing him to join the men’s elite.

Mier came prepared for the race but the unfamiliar and muddy route hindered his game and he was not able to finish the race because of the cut-off time.

“It was raining heavily and the course was very muddy. I didn’t expect suche route and I failed to finish within the cut-off. The equipment I brought was not made for such condition, ” Mier told Sun.Star Cebu in Cebuano.

Mier added that it rained heavily and it was cold since he arrived in Malaysia last week. It was also raining during the cross country race.

“Grabe naay lapok didto na agian lawom kaayo taga paa gud kutob. Lupig ko sa dinaganay kay ang route nahulog na more on dagan man, hinay kaayo ko mu dagan gud,” Mier said.

According to Mier, that despite the weather, the race was not postponed or rescheduled since it was on the UCI calendar. All UCI events push through regardless of weather.
