AFTER a scoreless debut, American Bendly Valdor showed his potentials after scoring 15 points to lead the Southwestern University Cobras to an 82-68 win over the smaller Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats in the main game of the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. Basketball tournament Thursday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

Valdor, who was in the middle of controversy this week after he was allowed to play despite coming in beyond the deadline, flashed his athleticism and high-leaping ability that gave the Cobras’ starting center enough time to rest.

However, Valdor was overeager in his effort to impress the Cebuano basketball fans as he missed some fancy shots including a break-away slam attempt during the second

But the 6’2” forward out of Deerfield Beach High School was simply unstoppable for the smaller Wildcats, who found their season debut over the University of the Visayas overshadowed by the superior Cobras.

SWU showed its dominance as early as the first few minutes of the game as its well-rounded offense had Jasper Parker, Landry Sanjo and Daryl Goloran opening up a 13-4 lead at the 6:14 mark of the first quarter.

Valdor scored his first two points in Cesafi at the 4:47 mark then followed it with another put back a minute and 45 seconds later.

On CIT-U’s side, it was only Joshua de la Cerna who scored the first points before Steven Bucao contributed to the Wildcats’ 10th point 21.3 seconds before the close of the fist quarter.

The Wildcats opened the second period with a quick 7-0 run but SWU answered with eight straight points to keep a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

The problem with the Wildcats was that some of its players were too conscious to score forcing them make hurried and ill-advice shots rather that wait for perfect time to launch an attempt at the higher percentage areas.

Sanjo added 13 points, reigning MVP Mark Jayven Tallo finished with 12 and Anton Pardo had 10 points for SWU, while De la Cerna and Allan Dimco each had 16 points. Franklyn Batiquin added with 15 and Bucao scored 11 points for CIT-U.

Later, the University of San Carlos Warriors will try to make the winner’s column as they play the defending champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers at the 5;30 p.m. match.

Opening today’s hostilities were Cebu Eastern College Dragons vs. Don Bosco Technological Center Greywolves at 1 p.m., to be followed by the UV Baby Lancers against the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars game at 2:30p.m. and the USC Baby Warriors against the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters at 4p.m.
