CEBU’s best chess players will once again try to gain a slot to the grand finals in December as the second qualifying tournament of the Cebu Open Chess Championships starts this Wednesday at the Cebu School of Chess along P. Del Rosario.

The event will use the seven-round Swiss System event and follows a standard time control of one hour and 30 minutes with 30-second increments. The top two players will join early qualifier Diego Claro Caparino of the University of Cebu and University of San Jose-Recoletos head coach NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr.

One round will be played every day at 6 p.m.,

The winner will take home P3,000, the second and third placers will receive P1,000 and P500, respectively. The fourth to 10th placers and the top female player will get P300 each.

In the first qualifying event, Edsel Montoya and USC chess coach NM Arnold Cadiz finished with 5.5 points apiece, , while Ritchie Evardo and Alejandre Rodrigo tied with 4.5 points.

However, the player who made the best impression was seven-year old Jerish John Velarde, who finished ninth in an open tournament.

The young chess prodigy from Lapu-Lapu City is set to play in South Africa for the World Youth Age-Group Chess Championship in September.
