MAYN Coran’s tough battle for a slot in the RP national sparring team paid off and she brought home a bronze medal in her first international stint.
Coran snagged the bronze medal of the women’s 44kg division of the inaugural World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Cadet Taekwondo Championships over the other day in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“Mayn is made of stern stuff. Her journey to the world championships was one of the most difficult stories in itself,” Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) Region 7 chairman Tony del Prado told Sun.Star Cebu. “We knew we were getting there and we already had a road map for it. But we did not expect it to be soon. It came two years early and what a pleasant surprise.”

The 14-year-old Coran initially didn’t make the cut and had to get through a series of evaluations. She finally made the team in May after being chosen in the final evaluation.

“She failed to win a medal during the CPJ National championships last February in Manila which effectively disqualified her from the national team. It was just one of those bad days athletes have. We had to appeal to Philippine Taekwondo CEO Grandmaster Hong that she be given a second look on the merits of her achievements prior to the elimination. It was granted and now she won a bronze for the country,” said del Prado.

Coran is the only medalist for the Philippines in the tournament thus far.
Coran is a talented jin and is a gold medalist MVP Best-of-the-Best Taekwondo Championships at SM Mall of Asia last year and perennial champion of regional competitions. However, she continues to surprise and impress.

“Mayn pierced our so called glass ceiling. A 14-year-old lass had to be the one to do it and she did.” (EKA)
