THE longest-running alumni-based basketball tournament, the Avenir Sacred Heart-Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (Shaabaa) 2014 Basketball Tournament, will open its 19th season at the Magis Eagles Arena at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Canduman gym.

This season, the new set of officers, led by Franco Soberano, will introduce a new division – the Division B. This Division is intended for players belonging to batch 1999 and earlier, or to players who don’t have enough experience or skills to compete against players in Division 1.

For the inaugural run, Division 2 has six teams-- Shakeys 1994, Belo Men 98, Cebu Appliance, Chick @ Phil 89, RDAK and White Gold Club.

Division 1 has nine teams, led by defending champions Goldberry Ilo-ilo Hotel and last year’s runner-up Insular Square Titans. The other teams are Cebu Landmasters, RDAK Stallions, San Jose Bakeshop, Colours, Batch 2014, Gaisano Capital and Beaver Sandals.

This season, Shaabaa will also have a new commissioner in ex-pro Al Solis, who will replace Bobby Inoferio.

Six games are scheduled to be played this Sunday.

Division 1 teams will play a single-round robin elimination round with the top eight advancing to the quarterfinal round. Division B will also play a single-round robin elimination round with the top four teams advancing to the semifinal round.

The championship rounds are both best-of-3 series.
