Basilgo wins battle of wits, advances to grand finals

ADRIAN Basilgo defeated Lapu-Lapu City’s wonder kid Jerish John Velarde in the final round to win the fourth qualifying round title and a slot to the grand finals in December in the Cebu Kiddies Championship at the Cebu School of Chess on P. del Rosario St.

Basilgo scored six points for the solo victory in the standard time-controlled tournament sponsored by Dubai-based Fide Arbiter and former Sun.Star Cebu sports editor Jobannie Tabada.

Basilgo and Velarde entered the final round Round 7 carrying five points each.


Claiming the second place as well as the second slot to was Jeena Balbona, who finished with 5.5 points.

Aside from finishing second place, Balbona also won the Top Female player title.

With the final round loss, Velarde settled for a tie of the third to fifth places along with Christian Ray Solante and Marphine Faith Mangubat who all finished with 5.0 points.
