MANILA — Two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso was picked by newcomer Blackwater Sports as its top choice, while second expansion team Kia Motors decided on Reil Cervantes as second overall pick during the PBA Dispersal Draft yesterday.
The 38-year-old Ildefonso, whose contract with Meralco Bolts will expire in August, was also the no. 1 overall pick by San Miguel Beer in 1998.
“I’m happy that a team in the PBA has still chosen me. There were many young guys at the table, but Blackwater made me no. 1 pick once again,” said Ildefonso.
Kia Motors playing coach Manny Pacquiao, who already confirmed his availability for the 2014 Rookie Draft on Aug. 24, was not able to show up in the dispersal draft. He was represented by assistant coach Glenn Capacio.
Aside from Ildefonso, Blackwater also drafted Alex Nuyles, Jay-Arr Cawaling, Eddie Laure, Paul Artadi, Bryan Faundo, JP Erram, Gilbert Bulawan, Bambam Gamalinda, Chris Timberlake, Norman Gonzales and Rob Celiz.
“Danny Ildefonso has the experience that we need in the team. He’s still good for two years. He is a good choice to lay down the foundation of this team,” said Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy.
Kia, on the other hand, picked Mike Burtscher, Hans Thiele, Alvin Padilla, Jai Reyes, Paul Sanga, Angie Raymundo, Eder Saldua, Nic Belasco, LA Revilla, Joshua Webb and Chad Alonzo.
“I think we have made a wise choice,” said Capacio.
For his part, Kia team manager Eric Pineda assured that they have not made arrangements with any team not to pick y Pacquiao on Draft day, which is in preparation for the 40th season of the professional league to start in October.
Veterans Larry Rodriguez of Rain or Shine and San Mig Coffee’s Ronnie Matias were left out by the two expansion teams, which said was mainly due to their high salaries.
