GILAS Pilipinas went scoreless in the last four minutes and 45 seconds of the game, but the 16-points lead it built up before the drought was enough to frustrate the taller India for a 70-66 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Fiba Asia Cup 2014 in Wuhan, China yesterday.

The Philippines will be facing another tall order in the semifinals as they face Iran in the semifinal round at 5:15 p.m. today.

Gilas are eyeing vengeance on the 7’4” Hamed Haddadi-led Iran, as they are the same team that denied Gilas the gold medal in the 2013 Fiba Asia tournament, the Fiba World qualifying tournament held in Manila in August last year.

After shooting 26-of-57 in the first 35 minutes of the game, Gilas went 0-of-6 in the final four minutes and 45 seconds allowing India to drop a 12-0 run.

But while their scoring went sour, Gilas’s defense held the charging Indians to just 3-of-9 field goal shooting, including 1-of-4 from the three point area, in the final four minutes.

India scored five-of-six from the free throw line.

Despite their lack of ceiling, Gilas dominated the shaded lane, scoring 40 to 20 points inside the paint, including 17-6 in second chance points, while ruling the boards 44-30.

Gilas were still hounded by turnovers as they made 22 while India made only 16.

Paul Lee topscored for Gilas for the fourth time with 15 points, Marcus Douthit had a double-double finish of 14 points and 12 rebounds and Ranidel De Ocampo contributed with 13 points.

Amritpal Singh scored the game high 20 points, while Pratham Sing and Vishesh Bhriguvanshi contributed with 10 points each for India.

Iran earlier booted Jordan following a commanding 75-60 win in their quarterfinal match.
