WEIGHTLIFTING will be included in the calendar of events in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) this season as a demonstration sport.

Cesafi Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. stressed that weightlfting would not be considered as a regular sport since only two schools offer these in their athletic programs.

He said that their purpose is to bring the sport to the awareness of its member schools.

“We will have weightlifting as demonstration sports, because there are not many schools that have weightlifting teams,” Tiukinhoy told Sun.Star Cebu.

Despite the lack of competitions, the University of Cebu and the University of San Jose-Recoletos have been giving scholarships to weightlifiters for years now.

The inclusion of weightlifting in the Cesafi calendar of events was recommended by Tiukinhoy in 2012, after Cebu hosted the National Students Weightlifting Championship, which served as a qualifying event to the Kazan Universiade last year.

UC and USJ-R lifters held their class against powerhouse teams University of the East and University of Zamboanga.

Cebuano weightlifters also made significant contributions to the medal count of Team
Cebu City in the past three POC-PSC National Games.

The demo event is expected to be held along with the other sports competitions which are expected to start in September.

The basketball tournament will open on Aug. 2 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cesafi is hoping that more schools will open a weightlifting varsity team that will give more opportunities for athletes to get scholarships.
