THE Cebu Lady Dragons failed to defend its lair and ended up with a second-place finish in the Inaugural All-Ladies 10s Rugby Festival last Saturday on the Cebu International School grounds.

After an unbeaten run in the elimination round of the first ladies-only rugby competition in Cebu, the Cebu Lady Dragons bowed to the visiting Bangkok Banger Belles of Thailand, 17-5.

“Cebu came in second. They beat all the teams in the round robin but just could not keep their concentration in the end and lost to a determined Bangkok team in the finals, 17-5,” said Cebu Lady Dragons coach Jerry Branzuela.

But despite a disappointing end, Branzuela was quite pleased with the team, which was composed mostly of new players.

“We have a young team with majority of them playing rugby for less than a year. Their overall performance as a team was excellent and their defense was exciting. They just couldn’t do it at the end. It was a hard lesson for them. In round robin tournaments, you can do well in all your games but it’s the final game that matters the most,” he said.

The Cebu Lady Dragons beat the Bangkok Banger Belles, Hong Kong's Meerkat Valley, Davao Lady Durians and rival Manila Mayhem in the first round before losing to the Bangkok Banger Belles in the championship match.

The Cebu Lady Dragons are getting ready for another championship match this month, the Philippine Rugby 10s, where they will be facing the Manila Mayhem at the Nomads Club in Parañaque. EKA
