Velarde, 7, joins older players on top of standing

YOUNG upstart Jerish John Velarde, 7, joined 16 other 14-year-old and under Kiddies players at the top of the standings at the end of the first three rounds of the 22nd Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships held in SM City-Consolacion yesterday.

The 7-year-old Velarde, a Grade 1 pupil of Lapu-Lapu City Central Elementary School, joined Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, Mark Villarojo, Valerio Mangubat and Jeremy Pepito, among others, who had 3.0 points at the start of the two-day competition.

Velarde earned his third point by defeating Shaina Claro in the third round.


Reigning National Juniors champion Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano meanwhile, gave out a draw in Round 3 to John Francis Balbona to stay half a point behind the 10 Junior players who stayed perfect after three matches.

The early leaders in the 20-Under Juniors division were Diego Claro, Vincent Balena, Daniel Miñoza, Joh Acedo, Adelaide Lim and Sherwin Amad. (RCM)
