FLYWEIGHT campaigner Charly Suarez advanced to the next round after beating hometown bet Jumsakbaev in the 4th Kazakhstan President’s Cup held in in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Suarez, who fought just his second match since he was sidelined in February of last year because of an injury, scored a hard-earned victory that earned him praises from the local boxing fans.

It was Suarez’s second win—his first was over Ammar of Iraq via unanimous decision.

The Kazakhstan tournament is part of the Philippine team’s selection process for the Asian Games in September.

Aside from the Sawata, Davao del Norte-native Suarez, Polomolok native and Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, Rogen Ladon and Dennis Galvan are the other Filipino fighters in the team. They are lead by Abap executive director Ed Picon and coaches Nolito Velasco and Elmer Pamisa.

Galvan lost to Mongolian Chinzorig via unaimous decision, while Saludar was set to fight Jorge Vivas of Cuba. Ladon will fight Kazakhstan fighter Erjian in the quarterfinal round.
