THE Cebu tennis community is excited about the inaugural International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) on Nov. 28-30, 2014 in Manila.

The tournament will feature current and former tennis players such as world No.1 Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Rafael Nadal, and former Grand Slam champions Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.

“This concept is exciting. The matches are short and every point counts. The format is like the NBA with plenty of music, lights and entertainment. For Manila to be chosen alongside Mumbai, Singapore and Dubai is amazing. I remember watching Lendl-Edberg in Manila in the ‘80s. This is even bigger. This is a great chance for us Filipinos to watch world-class tennis,” said John Pages.

Thailand was supposed to host the first leg but organizers transferred it to Manila due to the ongoing crisis in Thailand.

The other legs will be in Singapore on Dec. 2 to 4, Mumbai on Dec. 7 to 9 and Dubai on Dec. 11-14.
A former age group player, Dyan Marie Bohol, of the Citigreen tennis courts, is also excited.

“It is an exciting event to look forward to for the Philippine tennis players.

Definitely, manan-aw mi with my tennis friends. Ga-atang mi sa details regarding sa ticket sales,” said Bohol.

Sally Mae “Em-em” Siso, another former age group campaigner, is also excited but is hesitant to go due to her class schedule.

“Nindot na kaayo na para sa atong mga tennis players sa Philippines. Naa opportunity to see them play in person however for me to personally see them will depends on my class schedule kay mao mana ang start sa classes sa second semester,” said Siso.

Siso is currently studying at the University of San Carlos Main-Campus and is a member of the tennis team.

Jun Tabura, who helps his father Fritz in organizing tournaments, sees it as a big opportunity for tennis enthusiasts in the country and hopes the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) will give the top junior tennis players a chance to watch the games.

“Hinaut lang unta nga ang Philta maka patan aw sila sa mga top juniors for free para ma inspire pud sila and maka learn from the world’s great tennis players,” said Tabura.
