MANILA—After escaping with a big win the other day, grand slam seeking San Mig Coffee Mixers aim for a commanding 2-0 lead against Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at 8 p.m. today in Game 2 of the best-of-five titular series of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association PBA Governors Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Coach Tim Cone admitted that despite their three straight championships, they would not take any game lightly and should work hard to win the series.

“We have all the respect for Rain or Shine. Hopefully, we are smart enough to know that we cannot come out flat in a game in this series,” said Cone, who will again rely on top gunner James Yap.

The two-time MVP Yap struck heavily with 10 points in the pivotal period including the game’s last five points to escape with a 104-101 victory in Game One.

Coach Yeng Guiao also said that they have to forget the non-call by the referees off a foul by Marc Pingris on Paul Lee from beyond the three-point zone in the dying seconds that could have forced a five-minute extension.

“This is going to be a close series, close games but if the referees don’t do their job as they are supposed to, it could really diminish the beauty of the series. We just have to put this behind us,” said Guiao.

However, Pingris defended the non-call, saying it was good defense.

“Siya ‘yung nag-initiate ng contact. Ako ‘yung binangga. Straight lang ‘yung talon ko.

Hindi bale sana kung pabagsak ako sa kanya. Para sa akin, it was a good defense,” said Pingris.

A win by the Coffee Mixers today will move them just a win away from becoming the fourth team in the league to win a Grand slam. The Crispa Redmanizers did it in 1976 and 1983, San Miguel Beer won it in 1989 and Alaska had theirs in 1989. San Mig is also aiming for its 13th title since joining the league in 1988, while Cone is seeking for his 17th crown as a coach.
