Condes to return to int’l scene

THE last time former world champion Florante Condes saw action in an international fight was two years ago.

It was an International Boxing Organization (IBO) mini-flyweight title fight against Hekkie Budler in South Africa, where he lost by a lopsided unanimous decision.

After campaigning for the past few years in the Philippines, Condes returns to the international seen, taking on Japanese prospect Ryoichi Taguchi this Saturday night at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Condes has won back-to-back fights—a seventh round technical knockout over up-and-comer Cris Alfante for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan-Pacific mini-flyweight belt and a first round demolition over outmatched Charlie Cabilla.

Before that Condes was on a losing slump, dropping three in a row to Budler, Wanheng Menayothin and journeyman Donnie Mabao.

The 27-year-old Taguchi should be a tough assignment for Condes because of his experience and impressive credentials. He is a former Japanese champion and has fought Japanese phenom and current World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Naoya Inoue.

He lost to the 21-year-old Inoue by unanimous decision last year. However, he is the only fighter that survived the 21-year-old Japanese rising star's heavy hands.
