THE Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippine Championships will have a record field of participants this year with 2,600 triathletes taking part on the much anticipated event on August 3 in Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

According to Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI) project director Princess Galura, approximately 20 slots are left from the 100 slots they have added.

The initial 2,500 slots for the race were instantly sold out last October through online registration.

The 100 slots were added when the partnership between SEI and Mega World Corp. was sealed. With the latest addition, a total of 2,600 local and foreign triathletes will hit the roads and sea of Cebu.

The record-setting number of triathletes joining the competition made SEI and Mega World Corp. decide to use the closed Portofino Beach Resort as the new bike transition area.

This will be the third staging of Ironman in Cebu. The first was last 2012 drawing 1,200 triathletes, and last year, which had 2,000 triathletes. Before coming to Cebu, the other first three editions were staged in Camarines Sur.
