IM Yap beats Super GM in Asian Chess Clubs championships

PHILIPPINE entry Tagaytay Chess Club had a fair start in the 2014 Asian Chess Clubs Champions League Championships in Al Ain, UAE.

Playing against the top seeded and all-GM Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) squad of India, the Philippine representatives won two of the four matches in Round 1.

One of those two wins was delivered by Cebuano IM Kim Steven Yap while the other victory was handed by IM Emmanuel Senador in their 2-2 draw.


IM Yap (2419), the highest -rated player for the Philippine squad, played Board 2 and defeated Super GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2669), while Senador (2337) beat Deep Sengupta (2536) to put Tagaytay on the points board.

Yap defeated Sasikiran in 31 moves using the Sicilian Defence opening, while Senador forced Sengupta to concede in 34 moves of a French Defence opening.

Board 1 player Rolando Nolte (2395) lost to SP Sethuraman (2576) and FM Haridas Pascua (2389) bowed to Babu MR Lalith (2561).

Second seed Tokkata of Kazakhstan won all of its matches against Western Sydney team of Australia and third seed Shanghai Chess Club of China won two matches and drew two matches for a 3-1 win over Bangladesh Navy Chess Club.

The Philippines was set to face Iraq Communication Sports Club at press time last night and today, the Filipinos will face Bangladesh Navy Chess Club.
