JETHRO ESPLANADA topped the first qualifying tournament of the Cebu Juniors Chess Championships at the Cebu School of Chess last Sunday.

Esplanada, a University of San Jose-Recoletos Chess Varsity team member, finished with 6.0 points along with Vincent Balena in the seven-round tournament but had the higher tiebreak points.

Esplanada, who was leading Balena by half a point entering the final round, drew with Marq Gabrielle Balbona, while Balena defeated John Francis Balbona to get a share of the leadership.

Esplanada took home the champion’s trophy, cash prize and a slot in the December Grand Finals along with Balena.

Brothers Diego Abraham and Jethro Claro, Marq Gabrielle Balbona and John Arvert Cadiz completed the top five finishers after scoring 4.5 points each.

Laila Camel Nadera was the Top Female finisher with 4.0 points.

Meanwhile, Cebu’s top chess players will be playing for supremacy in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-rated Mayor Ian Christopher Escario Open Chess tournament this weekend in Bantayan Island.

The tournament offers P4,000 for the champion.
