THE Philippines’ amazing unbeaten run in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Girls Regional Championship was ended after the team lost to Thailand. 2-1, in the championship match last Sunday night at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
The Thais dictated the match early on and scored two goals in the first half.
Ratchaphan Kitiral hit the back of the net in the 11th minute, while Passama Laochaem found her mark just nine minutes later for a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Philippines, however, fought back and Cebuana midfielder Arantxa Trebol scored the only goal for the Filipinas in the 51st.
After finishing just runner-ups last year, Thailand, which was unbeaten in the tournament, finally took it all. They also beat defending champion Vietnam, 2-0, in the semifinals.
Despite the loss, the Philippines, however, did an impressive job this year finishing two spots higher than last year with a first runner-up finish. The Philippines ended up at fourth place last year.
Host Vietnam, on the other hand, took second runner-up honors after a convincing 3-1 victory over Myanmar.
Aside from Trebol, Cebuanas Istuko Bacatan and Jan Jumawan started for the Philippines along with goalkeeper Yasmin Elauria, Tejanee Isulaty, Tenelyn Otom, Patricia Francisco, Annika Velez, Joyce Semacio, Glynees dela Cruz and Lindsay Whaley.
The other members of the team are Alexandrea Gumilao, Stacey Arthur, Princess Caparida, Francesca Suerte, Chloe Hails and Jennifer Baroin.
