THOUGH it wasn’t the finish that he hoped for, Nonito Donaire Jr. still walked away as the new champion with the black and gold world title belt around his waist.
The 31-year-old Donaire Jr. dethroned Simpiwe Vetyeka via a unanimous technical decision to become the new WBA featherweight super champion last Saturday night in Macau.
The fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round due to a huge cut on the right eyelid of Donaire Jr.
All three judges gave the fight to Donaire Jr. with identical scores of 49-46.
“I want to thank God for keeping me safe and my angels for protecting me. I wanted to finish the fight continuing off the knockdown but unfortunately, my cut was called by the ref and docs. I wanted to keep fighting. I received 11 stitches and will need to heal this. I thank all my fans for their endless support and want to give them the best of me in my next match,” Donaire Jr. said in his official Facebook fan page.
An accidental clash of heads opened up a gash on the eyelid of Donaire Jr. in the opening round of the fight. It was checked by the ring physician and Donaire Jr. convince referee Luis Pabon not to prematurely stop the fight.
Donaire Jr. wobbled Vetyeka in the third round. And in the fourth, Donaire Jr. floored Vetyeka with a powerful left hook and got a much needed knockdown to widen the gap in the scorecards.
It was Donaire Jr.’s fifth division world title after becoming a world champion at flyweight, super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight.
He improved to 33-2 with 12 knockouts. Vetyeka, who lost in his first title defense, dropped to 26-3 with 16 knockouts.
Though he was the clear winner due to that knockdown, Donaire Jr. promised to give Vetyeka a shot at taking back the title.
