CEBU-based triathlete John Philip Dueñas recorded the fastest run segment to finish second overall in the second year of Defy 123 Triathlon last Sunday at The Bellevue Resort, Panglao, Bohol.

Dueñas, who is a running coach, had a drastic improvement on his run compared to his last year’s in Defy 123. He clocked in 44 minutes in the run leg this year to earn him not just the second place but also the special award—fastest run split. Dueñas said that last year, he clocked 49 minutes in the run and finished fifth overall.

“It was a come from behind win, I was the eighth during the swim leg and sixth in the bike leg. Fortunately, I was able to place second after the run,” Dueñas told Sun.Star Cebu in Cebuano yesterday.

The Defy 123 Triathlon covered a 1-kilometer swim, 110K bike and 12K run.

Dueñas finished the race in 4 hours 3 minutes and 28 seconds and was seven minutes behind two-time Defy123 Triathlon champion Michael Murphy of Australia. Murphy built his momentum from an outstanding swim leg en route to his title in 3:56:27. Parklane’s Emmanuel Commendador placed third in 4:06:25.

“The race this year was nicer compared to last year. Now they provided a lot water and Gatorade stations,” Dueñas said.

In the women’s division, defending champion Monica Torres dominated and finished more than 10 minutes ahead of the pack in 4:23:37. Keshia Fule came second in 4:34:28, while Lea Coline Langit crossed the finished line in 4:40:24 to take third place.
