JIFFORD Cahigas isn’t the first scoring option in his team but he somehow rose to the occasion and saved his best performance for last.

Cahigas exploded with a career-high of 36 points to help Cebu finally capture the coveted crown of the Coca Cola PBA Young Stars basketball tournament in Manila over the weekend.

After bowing to Batangas in their last elimination game, the Cebuanos avenged their only loss in the tournament with a 95-83 victory over Batangas in the championship match.

Cebu was aggressive early on and put on a full court press on Batangas, leading to a 10-0 run to start off the game. Cebu finished the first quarter with a 29-17 lead over Batangas.

The Cebuanos controlled the first half and was up ahead by 15 points at halftime after a 24-point first half performance by Cahigas.

Cebu led by as much as 17 points in the third. However, Batangas had a strong fourth quarter push and trimmed the lead to five points with five minutes left in regulation.

However, Cebu held on to the lead and walked away with the crown.

Cahigas tripled his national finals average of 12 points per game with his monstrous 36-point performance, while Joshua Flores chipped in 21 points and Orlan Wamar added

Raphael Chavez was also scorching hot and scored 34 points for Batangas in a losing effort, while VJ Alarcon added 22.

This is Cebu’s first title in the Coca Cola PBA Young Stars after only playing second fiddle to Rizal, Antipolo and Laguna in the past two seasons.

Cebu and Batangas received their trophies at halftime of the PBA game between Bgy. Ginebra and Meralco, which was awarded by PBA commissioner Chito Salud and Coca Cola’s Atty. Adel Tamano.

Flores was given the MVP plum, while Cahigas joined Flores in the tournament’s Mythical Five.
