‘Last-minute gold’-A A +A
Saturday, May 24, 2014
LAST-minute entries Therese Rae Ramas and Floremel Rodriguez topped an all-Cebuano final to win the beach volleyball title of the Philippine National Games over the University of Sto. Tomas, 21-10, 21-12.
Ramas and Rodriguez play for SWU, while UST’s Rica Rivera used to play for the University of San Jose-Recoletos and Cherry Ann Rondina is from Compostela.
Last year, Cebu was represented by Apple Saraum and Jusabelle Brillo, who also won the title.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) beach volleyball consultant Eric LeCain said deep serving was the key in the win.
“Cebu just outlasted UST in the hot sun,” said LeCain. SWU beach volleyball coach Dave Arreza said he was overwhelmed with the win and admitted he wasn’t expecting it.
“It was a last-minute decision although we did express our interest to join beach volleyball but wala man na apil sa budget sa Cebu City. Mao nang sa indoor nalang sila nako gipaduwa at first but when the team arrived in Manila, Cebu City decided to field a women’s beach volleyball team,” said Arreza.
SWU athletics director Ryan Aznar is also elated that his team delivered a gold medal for Cebu City.
“SWU is very proud to represent Cebu City in the PNG. Our players are just as capable of being champions. Unfortunately, during the National Nestea Beach Volleyball tournament, they played their worst game during the semifinals. Good thing they were able to recover and win the title in this tournament,” said Aznar.
The win made up for the loss of Jade Becaldo and Edward Ybañez to ARMM 2 and Edmar Bonono and Rommel Pepito to UST in men’s semifinal.
Meanwhile, Cebu City defeated Laguna, 4-1, to make the semifinal round in softball.
The boys of Coach Dionisio Bacarisas are ranked third with a 3-2 record and trail Philippine Air Force (4-1) and Navay (5-0). Laguna is fourth with a 2-3 record.
The semifinal starts today at 7 a.m with Laguna taking on the Air Force in the first game. Cebu City will try to avenge its 8-1 elimination game defeat against the Navy in the second game. (ISL/RSC)
