COACHES from Cebu and Gen. Santos City are in Cebu for a six-day seminar that serves as an introduction to a six-month Coach Advancement Program for the Philippine Academy of Sports.

The coaches’ six-month training program will be followed by a series of trainings until they are able to formulate a curriculum for student-athletes.

“We are training the coaches/teachers to become better coaches,” one of the coordinators, Sebastian Rippol, said.

Rizal High School in Pasig, Gen. Santos High School and Abellana High School in Cebu were the schools identified to become regional centers for this program. However, coaches from Rizal weren’t able to join the seminar due to a conflict of schedules.

The Philippine Academy of Sports is a program that is supported by the public and the private sector and aims to help schools improve their existing sports programs with a parallel curriculum between sports and academics. It aims to produce students who could excel in both sports and academics.

This program will focus on badminton, archery, arnis, swimming, football, sepak takraw, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo and softball.

“We want to enhance students’ opportunities to succeed in life, both from a sports perspective and an education and personal perspective,” said Sergio Bercial, one of the facilitators of the seminar. (Alvie Marie Yabo, CNU Comm. Intern)
