THE country’s fastest marathoner Mary Joy Tabal settled for second after losing to rival and former Cebu-based running queen Mary Grace delos Santos in the women’s 10,000 -meter run in the Philippine National Games at the Ultra Philsports Complex.

The event featured two of the fastest women’s marathon runners in the country and this time, delos Santos, who used to dominate Cebu races before Tabal, got first in 37:50, while Tabal finished second in 39:50. Jessa Mangsat of Baguio City got third place.

“The 10K run this morning was painful since I am used to 42K events. I had the lead in the first four kilometers, after that Mary Grace and I were pacing until I felt pain on my leg in the fifth kilometer. I was able to overcome it though after 6K but she was already ahead of me,” Tabal told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Tabal said that she felt pain on her ankle and suspects it as a result of wearing spike shoes in her training. Despite finishing second to her rival, the Cebuana praised delos Santos.

Tabal earlier said that she’s hoping to post a good time in this year’s PNG to get the attention of national team scouts.

“I think the 42K needs one more athlete, while the 10K has no national athletes yet.

I don’t know what my chances are. It’s up to the national team now if they’re going to consider me. I have won events in PNG the last couple of years but I did not receive any invitation. I think my chances are slim but I hope this year would be different,” Tabal said.

Since PNG does not have 42K event, the athletes’ best personal record time in 42K along with this year’s 10K finish time would be the basis in qualifying for 42K national team.

After the PNG Tabal will compete in the women’s 32K of Run United on June 1 in Manila.

Cebu City will also gun for another gold medal today after its men’s beach volleyball team advanced to the finals.
