Toledo rises to match No. 1 Tubbs

REY Dante Toledo of Danao City barged into today’s quarterfinals after winning against Francis Jay Ricana, 6-3, 4-1 (retire), in the boys 14 under of the 2014 Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age Group at the Mactan Airbase in Lapu-Lapu City.

The tournament is Group 2, sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta), and has scheduled 35 age group tournaments nationwide. The Cebu leg is considered the 11th in a series.

Toledo, 14, braved the scourging heat and won the third round to arrange a quarterfinal match against seed No. 1 Stephen Tubbs, who won against Adrian Charles Nacilla, 7-6(10), 6-2.


“This is will be the first time that I will be playing against Tubbs. I saw him play earlier and he is quite strong. I will just play my best tomorrow and hopefully win,” said Toledo, who picked up the sport when he was eight years old.

The other quarterfinalists are Maxine Ong. playing against Francis Lambayan, Sebastian Santos to face Giel Villaflor and Venz Anton Alforque to play against Jace Unto.

In the distaff side, Zethley Mae Alferez advanced to the quarterfinals after she easily won via default against Josette Nator and will play against the winner between Valerie Sabuero and Averille Sacapano. The other players are still playing as of press time for the quarterfinal slot.

In the boys 16 under, the quarterfinalists are Luke Flores to face Francis Lambayan, Norman Joseph Enriquez against Maxine Ong, Nathan Songco against John Clyde Laquio, Jace Unto and Manuel Francis Navales.

In the boys 18 under, Luke Flores routed Nicolas Edwin, 7-5, 7-5, to arrange a semifinals showdown against John Clyde Laquio, who easily won against Jethro Joshua Acosta via walk over.

Another semifinalist is Joshua Kinaadman, who won against Nathan Songco, 6-0, 6-2, and will play against Changmai Necesario, who defeated Jayme Catteo, 6-2,3-0 (retire).
