Undefeated Flores rules Cepca tilt

RETIRED ship captain Rey Flores took his spot in the December grand finals as he topped the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association monthly tournament last Sunday at the Handuraw Pizza.

Flores, who now teaches the game to young players, finished undefeated in five matches to win the May title. He will join 2013 grand champion Jimmy Ty, who won the January tournament, February titlist Mario Mangubat, March champion Tony Cabibil and April winner Rosendo Yamyamin.

Flores, the 2012 grand champion defeated current club president Jerry Maratas in Round 1, Sun.Star Cebu chess columnist Boy Pestaño in Round 2, previous president Jojo Muralla in Round 3, Eduard de la Torre in Round 4 and Philippine Air Force (PAF) sergeant Amado Olea in the final round.


Flores pocketed the top prize P1,500. De la Torre, who finished with 4.0 points, placed second and got P1,000. Ruel Hortellano who scored 3.5 points earned P500 for finishing third.
