Wednesday, May 14, 2014
THE Danao City Sports Commission will hold a pre-Asean Mountainbike Cup on May 18 in the cross-country and downhill courses in Barangay Manlayag Patag in Danao City.
This event is part of the dry run for the 2014 Asean MTB Cup, before it kicks off on June 13 to 15 in Danao. The second leg will be on Aug. 15 to 17 at Masilou Highlands, Kundasang in Malaysia.
This weekend’s event will test the cross-country and downhill courses that will be used in the first leg of the Asean MTB Cup.
The four-kilometer cross-country route is all set, ready and marked. While the 2K downhill course, which was made famous by the “kalubihan” trail used in the 1997 third Asian Mountain Bike Championships is ready as well. Known as such because of the several coconut trees along the trail.
Former national DH rider Bans Mendoza, who set the trail, added drops and jumps across the course to make the race more exciting and challenging.
UCI International Chief Commissaire Max Mager is also set to inspect the cross-country and downhill tracks in Danao tomorrow.
Mager is flying in from the UCI World Cup in Cairns Australia to do the final inspection on the race route.
UCI International Commissaire Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez said the route should be inspected by a chief commissaire since it’s a UCI-calendared event.
However, cross-country age groupers will not be using the dreaded “kalubihan” trail.
The trails are designated for the elite cyclist and downhillers only. The route also had a piece of history in MTB, where former national team rider Placido Valdez pocketed the gold medal in the 1997 Continental Championships in Danao City.
The Danao Sports Commission, on the other hand, are inviting all riders to join the competition on May 18. Riders can test the newly furbished and finished cross-country and downhill courses in this event.
Cash prizes of P2,000, P1,000 and P500 will be awarded to the top three in every division.
Trucks will be on standby and will pick up riders in the Danao City Boardwalk at 5:00 a.m to Barangay Manlayag Patag. The race will start at 6 a.m.
Registration is on-site at P200 inclusive of race kit and lunch. Participants will have to bring a valid identification card if they want to join in the age-groups. (RSC)
