Ycong, Gonzales rule Bogo 8080-A A +A

JORRY Ycong of Repro Optima tri-team and Parklane’s Cianyl Gonzalez both banked on their running skills to win the men’s and women’s divisions of the Bogo 8080 Triathlon last Sunday in Bogo, Cebu.
Ycong won in 3 hours 32 minutes and 13 seconds to top the 8080 full distance race that featured a 1.8-kilometer swim, 65K bike and 14K run.
Ycong broke the dominant three-race win streak of Parklane’s Kristiane Lim, who was leading in the first two segments. He finished in 3:33:52 for second place.
“I had the lead after the swim and bike. I decided to drop everyone else because I wasn’t happy with the pace. I was able to build a huge gap, but it was reduced to less than a minute in the second loop because of the traffic. In the end, the man who saved his legs for the run won,” Lim told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
“Jorry was able to use the dynamics of the race in his favor. He played it safe on the bike and drafted to other racers as much as he could. I played my cards on the bike, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t—that’s what makes this sport interesting,” he added, referring to Ycong’s effective game plan last Sunday.
Abet Biagan of Fish 18 team clocked in at 3:35:13 to take the men’s division third place.
In the women’s division, it was Parklane’s turn to end the dominance of an Omega Pro athlete. Gonzales, who trailed after the bike segment, took over in the running leg to finish in 4:13:36. Lorhiz Echavez-Lopez came in second in 4:16:04 and Louie Villacin was third in 4:25:19.
“The run was surprisingly good, I just realized that I was able to maintain my pace when I crossed the finish line. Overall, it was a good performance, I’m very satisfied with how everything has turned out considering that I’m still on my base training,” Gonzalez told Sun.Star Cebu.
Lopez, who won the NAGT in Danao last April 6, the second leg of the Triathlon Team Championships last April 13 and the Tri-Bantayan last May 3, came second to Gonzalez for the second event this year. Gonzalez also topped the first leg of the Triathlon Team Championships in Dalaguete last February.(RSC)
