CEBU’S pro mountain-biker Nino Surban stamped his class in the cross-country race dubbed the San Fernando XC Challenge 2014 yesterday at Plaza

Rizal South Poblacion, San Fernando, Cebu.
Surban was in for a close race in the first lap, before his biking prowess proved flawless in the second and third laps and earned him the win.

The race had three laps in men’s open, two laps for men’s junior, and one lap each for men’s beginner and women’s open. Each lap was 8K.

Warren Vinan and Randy Carbonera took the second and third places of the men’s open, respectively.

The juniors category was topped by Kit Cabonita, followed by Elmer Navarro and Roy Carbonera.

In the beginners category, Jhunvie Pagnanawun took the top honors, while Amon Espinosa came in second as Ramel Bayno settled in third place.
In the women’s open, Chyrel Gomez, Flordilis Bamboa and Maya Ocampo-Calatraba took the top three spots.

The top three in the men’s open pocketed P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000, respectively.

The juniors division winners went home with P4,000, P3,000 and P2,000.
The beginners and women’s open were awarded with P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.

Event organizer February Canoy said the XC challenge had a positive response from the participants despite the short preparation time.

“San Fernando XC Challenge will be an annual event. I think we would have more time to prepare next year. We expect more participants to join on the second edition,” Canoy told Sun.Star Cebu.

More than 70 riders joined this year’s event, which was in line with the town fiesta on May 14 to 15. (RSC)
