ALTHOUGH his team did not perform as expected, University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers starting guard John Abad still leads in the individual performance race of the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
After losing all its games last week in San Juan City, UV will try to improve when the Premier Cup will have its first out-of-town swing on May 21-25 in Cebu.
Last year’s champions University of the East Red Warriors and UAAP champions De La Salle University Green Archers will play UV, the University of San Carlos Wariors and Southwestern University Cobras in Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City.
Meanwhile, Abad had a total of 75 statistical points after three games to lead all players in the pre-season tournament.
The diminutive guard leads all scorers as he tallied 57 points in three games, highlighted by a 38-point outing against USC last May 2.
Aside from the scoring, Abad had 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals for a total of 79 statistical points. But he also had four turnovers, two each against USC and Jose Rizal University.
Mike Tolomia of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws trails Abad with 71, while USC’s Congolese center Espoir Toyambi is third with 70. San Beda College (SBC) Red Lions’ Arthur de la Cruz and Centro Escolar University (CEU) Scorpions both have 65 SPs to round up the top 5 players.
UV’s Cameroonian center Steve Cedric Akomo is the third Cebu-based player who made it to the top 30 performers with 40 SPs.
This early, Green Lancers are now trying to make their line-up stronger and will have an tryout at 9 a.m. today at the UV Gym.
