THE Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) started the 57th edition of the Palarong Pambansa at the San Luis Sports Complex in Sta. Cruz, Laguna on a strong note, earning easy wins in the team events.

Cviraa, which finished third last year, beat Caraga, 93-49, in secondary basketball, while the elementary boys and girls basketball teams also won.

The Cviraa secondary basketball team is composed of players from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and University of San Carlos Basic Education Department (USC-BED).

The secondary softball team also won against ARMM, 16-2, to make up for the loss of the elementary team.

The Palarong Pambansa will officially open today with boxing icon Manny Pacquiao leading the five-man torch relay. The other sports personalities who will join the relay are De La Salle University track team captain Jericho Estregan, Olympic skater Michael Martinez, former Palaro swimmer turned celebrity Enchong Dee and PBA superstar James Yap.

The opening will be graced by more than 11,000 athletes, coaches and trainers from the 17 regions.
