SAN JUAN CITY--After suffering separate defeats, Cebu teams will be shooting for its first-ever win when they face each other in the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena, which will host five games today.

The Cebu Landmasters-University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors lost, 78-61, to the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, while the CM Farm-backed University of the Visayas Green Lancers struggled against the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Altas, 83-61.

Both teams were out of sync and had more turnovers than team fouls.

Worse, both Cebuano squads shot below 40 percent, and looked like high school teams against the well-oiled collegiate teams of Manila.

However, the horrible Wednesday performance will be a history as both teams will face off at 12:30 p.m.

“We need to recover quickly. We have to put that dismal performance behind us now.

Everybody is back to their usual selves during our practice this morning and I am confident that we can quickly adapt to the playing environment,” said UV head coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. , referring to the air-conditioned venue.

Both USC and the Green Lancers are not used to playing in air-conditioned courts.

Familiar foe

Just like UV, coach Junthy Valenzuela is also trying to get his team in the groove.

“At least we are familiar with UV. So, there’s nothing especial preparations to make.

It’s going to be a totally different game than what we had back home. We are expecting UV to bounce back from yesterday’s bad game and so will we,” Valenzuela said.

USC will need to be consistent in rebounds, especially on the offensive glass, which is their weakness. UV will need to exert more efforts on its outside defense since the Warriors are deadly outside shooters especially from behind the 3-point area.

“Yung ilang (USC) three point shooting. Kana ilang strongest threat na dapat namo i-control,” Belano said.

“Ang ilang inside and outside threats ang kinahanglan namo ma limit, then control sa rebound. Kaya dapat active gyud mi sa depensa,” Valenzuela said.

Opening today’s games is the Women’s Division game between the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors and College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Lady Blazers at 10:45 a.m. to be followed by the USC-UV match.

The other games will be pit Centro Escolar University against CSB Blazers at 2:15 p.m, San Sebastian College-Recoletos against Emilio Aguinaldo College at 4 p.m. and Ateneo de Manila against Colegio de San Juan de Letran at 5:45 p.m.
