JOHNRIEL Casimero will follow a cautious approach in his International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight title defense this Saturday night against a relatively unknown challenger in Mauricio Fuentes.

But that doesn’t mean that he will be contented in just defending all night long.

“We will not rush in immediately in the early rounds because we don’t know the style of the opponent,” Casimero’s coach Christopher “Ping-Ping” Tepora told Sun.Star Cebu.

“We will attack as soon as we will be able to read our opponent’s style. For us, we
will do our best to give an exciting fight for the fans.”

The 12-round, world-title fight will be the main attraction on Saturday night’s “Pinoy Knockout” boxing show promoted by Omega Pain Killer Liniment and TV5 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

In the main supporting bout, unbeaten Harmonito dela Torre (12-0, 7 KOs) faces off with tough Gadwin Tubigon (10-8-2, 5 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) international super featherweight belt, while undefeated youngster Jack Tepora (9-0, 5 KOs) slugs it out with journeyman Joas Apericio (11-11, 8 KOs) for the vacant WBF International super bantamweight strap. There will also be seven more bouts in the undercard.

Fuentes, rated 12th in the IBF, is scheduled to arrive in Cebu City tonight.

Fuentes, a 24-year-old boxer from Colombia, is on a tear, winning 13 bouts in a row.

He has an impressive 16-2 slate, which includes 10 knockouts.

Fuentes has only lost to former world title challengers Jorle Estrada and Luis dela Ros.

This will be the first time that the 24-year-old Casimero will defend his crown in Cebu City, which he considers his second home.

Casimero has defended his crown thrice, which includes a title defense in Manila, in which he stopped challenger Felipe Salguero in 11 rounds.

Casimero, 19-2 with 11 knockouts, last fought in Cebu in 2011, a first round stoppage over Roemart Sentillas.

The weigh-in of the event will be this Friday at the SM City Cebu Food Court at 10:30 AM.
