MANILA — Rain or Shine faces Meralco while San Mig Coffee battles Alaska in today’s double do-or-die quarterfinal games of the 39th PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Elasto Painters and Meralco Bolts are tied at 1-1 and will face off at 2:45 p.m. for the right to face Talk ‘N Text in the best of five semifinal round starting Monday. San Mig Coffee also extended the quarterfinals, 1-1, after a 70-65 triumph over defending champion Alaska Aces last Wednesday.
The two will meet anew at 5 p.m.
The winner between the Coffee Mixers and Aces will face the victor between San Miguel Beer and Air 21 Express in the other semis battle. Both the Beermen and the Express were still playing at press time in another knockout game also at the Big Dome.
“Our victory last Wednesday gave us some confidence. We will play a little bit more energetic,” said San Mig coach Tim Cone, the most winningest coach in the league with 16 titles.
Coach Yeng Guiao’s Elasto Painters survived a scary 102-93 victory over Meralco Wednesday to avenge a 91-94 setback in Game 1 of the best-of-three series to force a sudden death match.
Guiao will again lean on import Wayne Chism, who finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and five steals, to lead Rain or Shine.
“It’s a very physical rugged game. There’s something that needs the attention of the league because it has gotten out of control sometimes. We have two days’ rest and that’s good for us. We will prepare for Saturday,” said Guiao.
Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Chito Salud said that Meralco forward Cliff Hodge’ hard foul on Rain or Shine rookie Raymond Almazan, which triggered a confrontation by Guiao at the end of Game 2, may be upgraded to flagrant foul.
“Name calling and the use of insulting language will have consequences and that’s the reason I invited Coach Yeng (Guiao) to hear his side, “ said Salud.
