MANILA—Talk ‘N Text and San Miguel Beermen, the top two seeded teams which enjoy twice-to-beat advantage, go for outright semifinal entry when they face separate foes in the quarterfinal round of the 39th PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Texters, the only unbeaten team with 9-0 slate at the end of the single round robin elimination, need only a win to oust Barangay Ginebra Kings in their 8 p.m. encounter today. Ginebra, which finished eighth with a 3-6 win-loss card following a 105-101 overtime setback to Rain or Shine last Sunday, has to win twice to pull an upset.

San Miguel Beermen, on the other hand, which settled for second with a 7-2 record, are expecting less trouble when they face no. 7 seed Air 21 Express at 5:45 p.m. The Express of coach Bong Ramos completed the elimination round with a 3-6 slate.

In the other quarterfinal matches, third seed Alaska (6-3) was still battling no. 6 San Mig Coffee (4-5), while no. 4 Rain or Shine (5-4) was to face no. 5 Meralco (5-4) at press time.

Gabe Freeman’s explosive start with the Gin Kings was not enough to pull off a stunning win over the Elasto Painters that relegated them to 8th spot. But coach Ato Agustin remains hopeful of their chances of making it to the semis citing a similar instance in the 1999 All-Filipino cup, when they won twice over the top seed Tropang Texter.
